2015 Lamborghini Veneno Roadster

The $4 million Lamborghini Veneno's maiden voyage

On a recent rainy afternoon, Antoine Dominic slid into the driver's seat of his gleaming $4 million Lamborghini Veneno. He pressed a red start button on the dashboard, and the 740-horsepower V12 engine roared to life.

"Do you know how to drive this thing?" I asked.

"We'll figure it out," he said. "What's the worst thing? You're gonna crash a $4 million car."

Thus began a rare moment in the rarified world of multimillion-dollar supercars. Dominic, a former tech CEO turned luxury car dealer, is one of only three people in the world who own a Lamborghini Veneno—the most expensive production car on the road today.

Dominic plunked down $4 million for the car without ever seeing it. Even after the Veneno was delivered, it stayed in the showroom of his Bespoke Motor Group dealership attracting gawkers and Lambo pilgrims from around the world. Dominic simply had never carved out the time to drive it.

But this spring, CNBC showed up and begged for a ride. Dominic was not only kind enough to take us on his maiden voyage, he also let us drive. Great cars, he said, are meant to be driven. And true car enthusiasts love to share them rather than treat them as museum-piece financial investments.

"This is a car that I'm gonna enjoy," he said. "It's a car. And I've loved cars ever since childhood."

Lamborghini didn't allow just anyone to buy a Veneno. It hand-picked three buyers based on their knowledge and appreciation of the Lamborghini brand and, of course, their buying history. The other two buyers include Kris Singh, a Florida investor, and an unnamed client in the Middle East.

Dominic was an ideal Veneno buyer. A former accountant from Sri Lanka, Dominic rose to become CEO of Excel Technology, a laser systems company that he later sold. An avid car collector, he wound up owning Bespoke Motor Group, a mega-dealership that sells Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Lamborghini cars.

When Dominic was invited by Lambo to buy the Veneno, the car hadn't even been built. Lamborghini just sent him a sales contract and asked him to quickly wire the $4 million sales price—based only on a rough artist rendering.

Dominic wired the money, then wondered if he had just made a $4 million mistake.

"I said 'what the heck did I just do?'" Dominic recalled. "'Did I do the right thing?'"

The answer turned out to be yes—at least judging by Dominic's smile as he guns the Veneno from a leisurely 20 miles per hour to "blur speed," when everything outside the windows becomes a fading blur as we drive along the back roads of Long Island, New York.

The exterior of the Veneno looks like a space-age destroyer from the Transformer movies—menacing, sleek and bristling with angled panels, air scoops, exhausts and razor-sharp fins. The car's exterior is made entirely from carbon fiber. All those cartoonish angles serve a purpose—to bring huge amounts of cooling air to the engine and create downdraft to keep the car on the road as it reaches its top speed of 220 miles per hour.

In December of last year we (and everybody else) picked up on a goofy, half-real video ad on Craigslist for a 1996 Nissan Maxima GLE. Seller Luke Aker overlaid classical music and a British voice to sell potential buyers on the “loaded Maxima with an engine, wheels, tires and an automatic transmission.”

Well, Nissan found its way to the ad, after it racked up 2 million views, and bought the car. It also donated $1,000 over the asking price to the Wounded Warrior Project.

When Nissan asked its fans what it should do with the car, the question was met with a resounding “restore it!” So that’s what they did.

The car is now fully restored and on display at Nissan’s HQ in Nashville. The company even made a follow up video, celebrating the rebirth of this icon.

"We brought the Concept XR-PHEV to LA so that we could talk about our new design direction and how future products will be taking clues from its dynamic lines," said MMNA Executive Vice President, Don Swearingen. "We also brought it to LA to reinforce the message that Mitsubishi is here to stay in the United States.  As we regrow the brand we will introduce new models while updating existing ones, creating a new look and a new value proposition for the brand."

Lexus team driver appears to confirm Toyota FT-1 Supra for production UPDATE: Toyota responds

Update: Well, that didn't take long -- Toyota tells us that the driver in the above video was "not an official representative of Toyota," noting that he does "not have the authority to speak on behalf of Toyota" and that he was "probably just reiterating what he's heard" in other automotive publications. Toyota's rep added that there are "no surprises" on the North American auto show circuit this year. We remain hopeful that there's a new Supra in the works, and we'll be sure to bring you any news as it becomes available.

We’ve been hearing about a supposed Toyota/BMW hybrid sports car partnership for quite a while now, and drooling over the Toyota FT-1 concept -- perhaps the starting point for a revival of the legendary Supra name -- for months now.

The above video seems to confirm both the BMW partnership and the hot Toyota. Posted by YouTube user and ft1club.com forum member Godeepgts11, the video shows an otherwise standard hot lap in a Lexus RC F -- until the topic of Supras comes up. That’s where it gets interesting.

“When that new Supra comes out, that should be pretty neat,” states the driver, casually confirming what we’ve all been hoping for since the Detroit auto show debut of the FT-1 concept.

Other details we gleaned from the brief exchange, which starts at about the 2:10 mark in the video:

-The car will have a “BMW chassis, so it should be pretty good.”

-And “I hear that they’re gonna use the [upcoming new] Z4 frame.”

We've contacted Toyota representatives to substantiate the claims made in the clip, but at this point all they're saying is that "nothing is on our auto show calendar any time soon, at least not in the United States."  However, the details jibe with what has been rumored for several years -- and who would know better about upcoming Toyota/Lexus product than an official test driver, anyway [update: Toyota claims the driver was hired for the event and is not an official driver for the automaker]?

There’s a bit more information at the ft1club.com forums, including some comparisons between the BMW i8’s carbon fiber chassis, the FT-1 and a rendering of the upcoming Z4. We can see how that component could be used as the basis for the theorized BMW and Toyota two-doors.

Of course, we’re fond of the Supra and very fond of the FT-1 concept, so we might be hearing what we want to hear. Or believing what we want to believe -- the audio is, at the very least, clear in the above recording.

Lexus LF-C2 concept hints at future droptop at Los Angeles Auto Show

It doesn’t take much imagination to see that the Lexus LF-C2 concept is just a convertible version of the RC coupe. Except that, while topless, the concept is not a convertible but a roadster, because it has no roof hidden anywhere. That’s just one of many controversial styling points of the LF-C2. Look at it long enough and your eyeballs will melt from that hyperactive yellow-over-silver paint job. Look longer still and the spindle grille will seem spindlier. Peruse those wheels and…

Let’s just say the LF-C2 got a lot of people talking in the LA Convention Center’s South Hall.

"The LF-C2 concept shows what’s in store for our brand’s future design direction,” said Jeff Bracken, Lexus group vice president and general manager. “This concept shows consumers around the world Lexus’ devotion to emotional designs as well as our passion for an exceptional driving experience.”

So don’t expect any backing away from the spurious spindle.

Word is the LF-C2 is based off the RC Coupe, which is based off a mix of IS and GS underpinnings. It’s not a bad idea on the surface, and you can bet the production convertible will be a lot more practical when it comes out -- possibly in late 2016.  

A production version of the LF-C2 roadster would likely share powertrains with the RC Coupe. At first that’s likely to mean the RC’s 3.5-liter 306-hp V6, but a 2.0-liter turbo could also be in the works. No word whether we’ll see a roadster/convertible version with the RC-F’s 460-hp V8. For that, we could overlook the grille.

2015 BMW i8 revealed at the Frankfurt motor show

After years of teasing us with images, concepts and vinyl-wrapped prototypes, BMW has finally lifted the curtain on the hybrid i8 sports car at the Frankfurt motor show -- and given North American roundel lovers who also happen to be green fanatics some pricing information to mull over. The German automaker expects the i8 to retail for $135,700 (plus unspecified destination and handling charges). Look for it in U.S. showrooms next spring.

Beyond the pricing information and glimpses of the i8's complex curves free at last of dazzling camouflage, however, specifications haven't changed much since we reviewed an i8 prototype last month. The plug-in hybrid's three-cylinder 1.5-liter gasoline engine cranks out 231 hp and 236 lb ft of torque; add in an electric motor and the combined output jumps to 362 hp and 420 lb ft. A six-speed automatic is the only available gearbox.

It's good enough for a 0-62-mph sprint of 4.4 seconds while supposedly returning the equivalent of 94 mpg. We suspect that return will vary based on which of the three driving modes -- sport, comfort or eco pro -- happens to be selected. All-electric drive is possible, but only for about 22 miles.

The BMW i8 is a fascinating car in its own right, and -- along with the roadster version expected in 2015 -- should provide eco-conscious enthusiasts M3 performance without the green guilt. We're eager to see how the technology of the high-dollar statement in carbon fiber filters down to BMW's more conventional offerings.

Special BMW Officially Introduced in Japan

Tokyo, -Once in production in Japan and is marketed in Japan, eventually BMW 740i introduce their executive edition. Hmm, how to display the full huh?

In the news Inautonews, Friday (11/21/2014), the BMW 740i Executive Edition finally officially introduced in Japan.

"At Ford Racing, we always try to exceed the limit," said Ford Racing Director Jamie Allison quoted Motortrend.

Shown with a blend of black, gold and red, this car was developed from the initial model that only has a 435 HP. Manufacturer based in Detroit it added nearly 200 horsepower.

They added a supercharged V8 engine capacity of 5.0 liters. The machine is capable of spraying up to 625 horsepower. Coupled with the chassis FR2 Drag Pack-equipped.

Additionally, FR3 Handling Pack, heavy-duty half-shafts, bushings kits, 6-piston calipers and sway bars, too increase the performance of the King Cobra. Recaro seats and a short-throw shifter also equip the inside of the car.

While on the outside, there is a carved rim with King Cobra. The car is packed with typical scales picture cobra skin.
