What is the Difference between Diesel Engines Gasoline Engines?


Knowing the difference between diesel and petrol engines must begin by understanding the combustion process used by both types of these machines.

Diesel and petrol engines are both working with internal combustion piston and use to create mechanical energy.

However, what happens in the engine cylinder is a key difference in the way the work and efficiency of both types of machines.

In gasoline engines, the fuel is mixed with air, and then compressed by a piston, which then caught fire with the help of a spark from the spark plug.

Fuel and air are burned and then release the energy that is used to drive the piston.

Diesel engine uses a slightly different process to produce mechanical energy. When the piston rises in the cylinder, the air in the cylinder also compressed.

Along the greater the pressure, the temperature of the air in the cylinder increases drastically.

Combustion occurs when the diesel is sprayed through a nozzle injectors into the high-pressure hot air in the cylinder.

Diesel engines do not require spark plugs for diesel fuel can be burnt by itself while in the air cylinder with heat and high pressure.

No need for spark plugs is the main difference between diesel and petrol engines.

Diesel and gasoline engines are also different in terms of durability. However, it should be noted that diesel engines using fuel that is not as clean as gasoline.

Therefore, care needs to be properly addressed to the owners of diesel-powered vehicles.

However, if treated properly, diesel engines typically last longer, partly because diesel fuel is not corrosive like gasoline.

A common thing that diesel engines can last 322,000 miles to 800,000 miles on non-commercial vehicles prior to replacement or major maintenance.

While commercial vehicles with diesel engines can reach at least 800,000 miles though more than it is not a strange thing.

Durability should be a factor when considering whether to choose a vehicle with a diesel or gasoline engine.
