Who is the inventor Airbag (Air Bag)? History & Facts Other

Airbag (air bags) is a type of car that functions similar safety seat belt.

Shaped airbag gas bearings are mounted on the steering wheel, dashboard, doors, roof, or a car passenger seat automatically activated when the car suffered collision (accident).

Inventors & History Airbag

Allen Breed holds a patent (US # 5,071,161) which is a crash sensing technology which became the forerunner of the birth of the airbag.

Breed create "sensors and security systems" in 1968, which became the first electromechanical automotive airbag systems.

However, a similar patent airbag technology has actually been registered since the 1950s.

The patent application filed by Walter Linderer of Germany and John Hedrik of America in 1951.

Airbag Walter Linderer based on the compressed air system that is active when a collision on the bumper or activated manually by the driver.

Research in the sixties proved that the compressed air can not blow the bag fast enough so it is not ideal to use as a shield. Linderer received a German patent # 896 312.

John Hedrik received US Patent # 2,649,311 in 1953 for what he called "safety cushion assembly for automotive vehicles."

introduction Airbag

In 1971, the Ford car company to build an experimental airbag fleet. General Motors tested airbags on in 1973 for a car that is only sold for the benefit of the government.

In 1973, Oldsmobile Toronado was the first car with a passenger air bag that is sold to the public.

General Motors then offers the driver side airbag on the Oldsmobile and Buick in 1975 and 1976.

Unfortunately, the initial airbag system has a design problem that it resulted in death, instead of protecting.

Airbag then once again offered as an option on the Ford Tempo in 1984.

In 1988, Chrysler became the first company to offer air bag system as standard equipment.

type Airbag

There are two types of airbags, front (frontal) and various types of side airbags. Front airbags have sensors that will decide when the airbag should inflate.

While side air bags (side-impact air bag) is designed to protect the head and / or chest when a serious accident involving the vehicle.
